We drove to Spurn Point, a few miles south of where my earlier beach erosion pictures came from and discovered the Godwin Battery, a WWII coastal defense site gone to ruin. This site was built to protect the coast from zee Germans, who were planning an invasion from the sea. As we left the parking area and walked down onto the beach, I was reminded of the scene in The Planet of the Apes where Charleton Heston first sees the half buried Statue of Liberty in the sand!
These huge concrete structures were once supported by the earth, which has since been washed away, leaving the structures to fall onto the beach. This was part of a gun emplacement.
The land has eroded about 500 feet or so, leaving these massive concrete pieces scattered on the beach. This piece is about 8 feet tall by 400 feet square.
Some are perched precariously, waiting their turn to fall.
Another gun emplacement. In the background, you can see the large concrete blocks used to build an anti-tank wall.
The underside of a stretch of tarmac, about 20 feet up from the beach.
Peace my friends!
