Ho'okena Beach

We spent the night in Wanda at Ho'okena Beach to get a feel for the local color and characters. The beach is accessed by a two mile drive down from the main road. All along the road is a 3 inch water pipe, above ground, that brings water down to the beach. The pipe heats up all day, so the showers and rinsing stations have hot water all day! The beach was very warm and the water was nice. We didn't see any of the spinner dolphins that frequent the beach, nor any whales passing by. Plenty of feral cats and Kirsty saw a mongoose. The sand is a mixture of black volcanic rock and white coral.

A bit fuzzy, but you can see Wanda's pop-top between the coconut tress on the left.

Tide pools abound!

Early morning view of Mauna Loa (largest volcano in the world) as it rises out of the ocean.

Local outrigger boats.

 Early morning.

Moments before sunset.

Peace my friends!
